Is the title above strange for you? There is no mistake, it is real. A team of American doctors announced on April 16, 2008 the discover of a new neurological disease that causes inflammation in the nerves, violent pain and hardness of movements.Extremaly rare, the disease seems to reach just people that work in the suine brain removal and that work without any kind of protection.
I know what you are thinking: “What a hell - does anybody want to remove the brain of a pork?” Well, although weird, the suine brain works as a food in many countries of Asia. In the Ocident it is very rare that dish in the menu, but some factories of pork meat procedure in United States of America export suine brain to Asian market, where recently the first cases were detected. Disease itself still doesn’t have a name. Doctors call it “progressive inflammatory neuropathy”. “We know that is not one of the best names but that is everything we know till now. For sure we will have a name in the future, but we still don’t know what it will be”, explained one of the discovery doctors, the neurologist Daniel Lachance, from Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, U.S.A. The investigation about the disease is still in course but the doctors have already known something. They know the disease is caused through the exposition to the procedure of suine brain meat through the compressed air and it seems to appear when small pieces of the brain tissue make contact with the human organism. The only possibility of that happens is through the breating because the workers wear gloves and don’t eat the meat.
Symptons appear fastly, in weeks. Lachance says:”I have the case of a woman that has never worked, she’s just created her kids. She decided to look for a job and started to work with pork brain removal on September. In few weeks she showed the first symtons and on December she was already in treatment with me”.
In common, all the patients described violent pain, weakness and tiredness. Besides, they showed formication and absence of sensibility in arms and legs. The symptons, in accordance with Lachance’s team, appear because the disease inflamms the vertebral column nerves. Eighteen cases of that disease were situated in a factory in the American state of Minnesota. There are other six suspicious cases under investigation, being five in a factory in Indiana and one in Nebraska. From the eighteen affected people, half are women and half are men, aged from 20 to 54. The only thing in common that the sick people had was the fact of working on the same place.
According to an American Government study, those unities seem to be the only ones that make suine brain removal in that country. The American Center of Diseases Control in the United States has been worked together with the Health World Organization for finding other factories in other countries. “That is an extremally rare procedure”, explained the neurologist James Sejvar.
The first analysis indicate that there is no danger in the pork meat consumption, even from the suine brain. The disease seems to appear only in cases of direct exposition to the removal process. There are no signals of contammination from one people to another and neither that animals were sick before slaughtering. Lachance said: “We still know very few but we are investigating. In few months maybe we can have completely new things”. The writings are truth when they forbid the consumption of pork meat.
